Halo is a proposed film based on the video game series, developed by Bungie Studios. The film is to be directed by Neill Blomkamp with Peter Jackson as executive producer. The film had a target release date of 2008[1] but production had been postponed until 2009 due to production financing. Fox picked up the project[2] in October 2006. On October 4, 2007, Neill Blomkamp declared the movie "dead". In an interview with Creativity Online, he stated "The film is entirely dead. In the configuration it was in. Whatever happens with that movie, assuming that movie gets made, will be a totally different configuration." However, Jackson's representative Ken Kamins has stated that the film may still be made.[3]

[edit] Screenplay
On July 13, 2006, author D.B. Weiss revealed in an interview that he was writing the screenplay for Halo. At the time of the interview, Weiss said that he was working on his second draft of the new script, which contained elements of the project's original screenplay by Alex Garland.[4]
In late October, 2006, Variety magazine reported that screenwriter Josh Olson (A History of Violence) was working on the latest rewrite.[5]
[edit] Pre-production
On October 4, 2005, Bungie Studios announced that director Peter Jackson was signed onto the project as an executive producer.[6] The following year, on August 10, 2006, Universal Pictures announced that Neill Blomkamp was attached to helm the project, where he would make his feature film directorial debut. The Weta Workshop and Weta Digital film effects companies were also announced to be responsible for handling Halo's effects. The film will be shot in Wellington, New Zealand and is slated for a summer 2008 release.[7] To keep the film's producers true to the Halo Universe, Bungie prepared an exhaustive encyclopedia known to some as either the "Halo Compendium" or the "Halo Story Bible", describing nearly every topic in the Halo games and novels including graphics of characters, species and vessels.[6]
[edit] Studio backout and possible cancellation
On October 19, 2006, both Universal Studios and 20th Century Fox, who had agreed to co-finance the screen adaptation of the popular Microsoft game, abruptly backed out of the picture, leaving rumors floating that the budget may be rising above the projected $135 million.[8] Microsoft attempted to secure financing from other studios, including Warner Bros. and Paramount, to keep the project moving,[9] but production was officially halted and postponed on October 31, 2006 until additional backing could be found.
On May 21, 2007 Peter Jackson, in an interview with Cinematical.com, said that he expected that the project will get back on its feet once studios "catch a glimpse of the Halo hype first-hand" (with the release of Halo 3).[10]
On October 4, 2007, Neill Blomkamp declared the movie "dead". In an interview with Creativity Online, he stated "The film is entirely dead. In the configuration it was in. Whatever happens with that movie, assuming that movie gets made, will be a totally different configuration." Discussing the film's future, he goes on to say, "Right now, I can't see myself doing that film. But I'm not going to say that I'm not going to do it."[11]
However, a day later Frank O'Connor, Bungie's content manager, said in an interview with Game Informer that "nobody can declare it [the film] dead except for the owner of the IP [Microsoft]."[12]
On October 29, 2007 Ken Kamins, Peter Jackson's representative, confirmed in an interview that the Halo film was still in pre-production phase. "What happened was this: Universal, on behalf of both studios, asked for a meeting with the filmmakers just prior to the due date of a significant payment," said Kamins. "Basically, they said that in order to move forward with the film, the filmmakers had to significantly reduce their deals. They waited until the last minute to have this conversation. Peter and Fran, after speaking with their producing partners and with Microsoft and Bungie, respectfully declined."
According to Kamins would-be director Blomkamp has not been dropped either, in spite of his earlier statements."Everybody is supremely confident in Neill. Part of what excited Peter and Fran was Neill's vision. We're very confident this film will move forward with the creative partners intact, who will take the film to production."[3]
[edit] Promotional shorts
On July 10, 2007, Microsoft released a short film, simultaneously acting as a teaser for both Halo 3 and the film, of the name Arms Race, showing various special effects and vehicles and other elements of the Halo Universe near the end of the E3 Media and Business Summit. On August 27, 2007, another short film, called Combat, was released on 1up.com. This video depicted the Brutes fighting against the UNSC. On October 04, 2007, Discovery Channel aired a clip from the film during Last One Standing, at 9 PM. A preview was available at Discovery.com.[13] The Combat shorts seemed to lead up to Halo 3's storyline. Near the end of the second Combat short, a Marine is seen pulling out a Laser Targeter and aims at something ripping through the atmosphere. This turns out to be the Master Chief, and the targeting was used to show a rescue team where the Chief will land (which leads to the first cutscene in Halo 3). _________________
